HelpVillages.Org's Guide Report on Charities:
It is unfortunate that there are people out there lurking and waiting for a kind hearted person to give to a charity. These mean spirited people are waiting to take advantage of another person’s kindness by tricking them into giving to a charity that doesn’t really exist. There are ways to spot these charity scams and make sure that your money is going to a worthy charity.
Are The Charity’s Finances Open To The Public? - Before giving to a new charity, ask if their financial records are open to the public. A charity that has nothing to hide won’t mind letting people know how their money is being spent.
Check the charity’s giving credibility. The Better Business Bureau Wise Giving Alliance offers information about national charities. You can check out their website at Give.org or call them at 703-276-0100.
Consider how much of your money goes directly towards helping others. Most fundraisers keep a rather larger proportion of every donation they collect.
Be wary of people putting on the pressure. A worthy charity will not call you on the phone or otherwise harass people to give up money.
Make sure the charity is the real thing and not a sound alike. Scam artists will invent a charity that sounds similar to a legit charity in hopes of confusing the giver. If you are not sure if the charity is the real thing; do an internet search or contact your Better Business Bureau.
.
Be cautious after natural disasters or tragedies. Many scam artists take advantage of sad situations. If you really want to give it is best to donate your money to the Red Cross, Doctors Without Borders, or another well known charity.
And of course, beyond Red Cross, Doctors Without Borders, Salvation Army, or any other popular charity group, you are more than welcome to give to those who need yourself without relying on anyone or organization.
Don’t open unsolicited emails. Many fraudulent charities will solicit through emails. If you haven’t subscribed to the sender’s list; don’t open the email
Be ware of fundraisers for police and f ire fighters. Before giving to this type of charity you should check with your local police station to check on the credibility of the fundraiser.
